Bratwurst a la Bistek Tagalog with Jalapeño Peppers

Only two more days before the big game, and I know how a lot of Americans are gearing up for their Super Bowl party. Growing up in the Philippines where people don't really give much attention to football, I admit that I am not a football fan...but I must say that I really enjoy watching the Super Bowl! With all the funny commercials and the amazing artist/s performing for the halftime show, who wouldn't???

If you are hosting a party this Sunday or have been asked to bring something to it, and you want something new, this Bratwurst a la Bistek Tagalog with Jalapeño Peppers that I'm sharing with you today is a wonderful option. It's Bratwurst (German sausage) cooked like Bistek Tagalog which is a favorite Filipino beef dish wherein  beef is marinated and cooked in soy sauce and calamansi (Filipino lime) then garnished with lots of caramelized onion rings.

This simple yet great tasting recipe is a good twist to the favorite grilled bratwurst. The wonderful combination of lime and soy sauce plus the mild kick from the Jalapeño pepper definitely bring bratwursts to a new level. It's easy to prepare and doesn't require much ingredients. Just like the classic Bistek, we love this with rice, but this will also work so well with your favorite rolls.
Give this recipe a try and let me know what you think!

Ingredients:

  • 8 pcs. bratwurst, cooked accdg. to package "skillet preparation" directions and bias-sliced
  • 1/3 cup fresh lemon (or calamansi extract)
  • ½ cup soy sauce
  • 2 large onions, 1 chopped and 1 sliced into rings (you can use either white or yellow onions. I used 1 red and 1 yellow)
  • 5 stalks green onions, chopped
  • 3 pcs. Jalapeño pepper, seeds removed and sliced into rings
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 Tbsp olive oil
  • salt & pepper to taste

Procedure:
1. Over medium heat, saute garlic in olive oil until light brown. Add bratwurst and saute for about a minute.
2. Add the chopped onions, and saute until almost translucent. Add lemon or calamansi juice, and soy sauce. Bring to a boil. Add half of the green onions. Reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer for about 10 minutes. Uncover and simmer for another 3 minutes to allow the sauce to evaporate.
3. Add Jalapeño peppers and onion rings. Season with salt (if necessary) and pepper to suit your taste. Simmer while stirring until onions start to caramelized. Add remaining green onions and simmer for another minute.

4. Remove from heat. Serve with rolls (or rice if you're at home or at a Filipino party).
Wishing you all a fun and safe weekend!

  10. This recipe goes with both, either with rice for a heavier meal and with rolls as finger food or bites. I don't eat beef Tina but sure no harm in getting credits because the flavors inside are lovely, that sour and spicy taste are great combo.

Btw, I am away and sorry if can't comment on your blog on time. Will back by Wed and will keep in touch from there on.

  14. This is crazy. I'm not a fan of hotdogs or sausages in a hot dog bun, but this bratz on a roll with onions and jalapeno sounds and looks great! Why didn't I think of that? :) Delicious!
